And after Caesar [the Emperor Charles V] and the noble Princes of his house bowed with all ardent humility, the whole city became fervent with piety, and following the Emperor’s example, love of the Divine Sacrament of the Eucharist increased within all the souls of the people.

–Nicolai Vernulaei as quoted in The Last Descendant of Aeneas: The Hapsburgs and the Mythic Image of the Emperor by Marie Tanner. (Translation is my own.)

In the snow bound halls of the Imperial Hunting Lodge at Eckartsau, a family of exiles celebrated the last Christmas of the old world. The war that had racked that world for the past four years was finally over, and with it many things good and evil. In a year of world turmoil as the steadfast empire at the heart of Europe faded, the father of his peoples watched as his children exchanged small gifts under a glowing Christmas tree. The presents, as Gordon Brook-Shepherd relates in Uncrowned Emperor, were gifts from every land and nation of the Empire, lands now stirring with revolution and terror. Yet this night, this holy and silent night, all was as still as the new fallen snow. The Christ Child had come in the night, it was Christmas.  Continue reading →

100th Anniversary, 12 November, Austria, Bl. Karl of Austria, christendom, Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn, Holy Roman Empire, November, The Great War, WWI

I have had no country since November 1918… That was the time when Austria was literally carved into pieces. Mangled. Quartered. One shred they held up in sheer mockery and called it Austria. That’s what you children have been taught to call Austria… Heaven my young man, is like Austria, the old, real Austria…

-Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn, Black Banners

One hundred years ago today the last bastion of Catholicism and patriotism was brutally torn apart by famine, revolution, and military force. And just yesterday, this very year, a major world leader proclaimed that in fact that very Patriotism was right all along, and that the nationalism which replaced it was the betrayal of all nations. One hundred years ago the symbol of the ideal of government which served the universal Common Good was lowered from the flagstaff for the last time. How many hundred years more must we wait before it is raised again? Now when we fear the loss of our civilization more than ever, the very embodiment of the West lies forgotten and mourned only by a few. And we few who mourn cannot seem to find her memorial anywhere on this earth, and as the shadows lengthen around us, we seem to hear as if a far-off whisper, “Why seek you the living among the dead?”

“A Revolution, a Breach of Law”

12 November, Austria, Austrian Empire, Hans Karl von Zessner-Spitzenberg, Legality, Legtimacy, Old Empire Day, Republic of Austria

The 12th of November, 1918, was a Revolution, a breach of law, a breach of faith, against the Emperor as Emperor, and especially against him as the Sovereign of his countries [Landesfürsten]  and at the same time a revolution against the Crownlands and the authorities of the Crownlands.

The act of November 12th, 1918 can not be objectively judged any differently. It lacks any derivative or original legitimacy. It established usurpatory powers. They have established for themselves a legal state, to be respected as a legal power, but have not eliminated the moral right of the repressed legitimate authority to return, as well as the moral duty of all those today in power to return to the legitimate order as far as is possible; here again, even during such times when the Restoration is impossible, emphasis must be placed on obligation of loyalty.

This era no longer wants us! This era wants to create independent nations-states! People no longer believe in God. The new religion is nationalism. Nations no longer go to church. They go to national associations. The Monarchy, our Monarchy, is founded on piety, on the faith that God chose the Hapsburgs to rule over so and so many Christian peoples. Our Emperor is a secular brother of the Pope, he is His Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty; no other is as apostolic, no other majesty in Europe is as dependent on the Grace of God and on the faith of the peoples in the Grace of God… The Emperor of Austria-Hungary must not be abandoned by God.

Mander ‘s isch Zeit!

On the morning of the ninth of April, 1809, the Church bells tolled fiercely, summoning the men of the Imperial County of Tyrol to gather in defense of their country. The Heir of Revolutionary Nationalism, the tyrant styling himself as Emperor, had suppressed the ancient liberties and Austrian loyalty of the Tyrol for long enough. The next day Imperial forces under the command of Archduke Karl von Teschen crossed the river Inn, beginning the War of the Fifth Coalition. In South Tyrol an army was gathering, under the command of a former militia captain, Andreas Hofer, the Innkeeper of Passeiertal.

Austria has always been a stronghold of Catholicism: the former head of the supranational Holy Roman Empire, the secular arm of Christendom, has always been a luminous antithesis to all forms of provincialism. This is not primarily because Austria was the head of a great empire with many inhabitants, but rather because it was Catholic, Western, and supranational…

-Dietrich von Hildebrand, Der Genius Österreichs und der Provinzialismus

Austria, the true heir and embodiment of the Holy Roman Empire, has always reflected in its forms and institutions the true Catholic ideal of the supranational country. Ever since the Roman Empire was transformed into a truly foederatial system in the fifth century Heroic Age has Christendom striven for this ideal. However, in few institutions has this ideal ever been as wholly achieved or pursued as in the Kaiserlich und Königlich Gemeinsame Armee, the Imperial and Royal Common Army, of which the Hapsburg Restoration Movement is in part a spiritual succesor and continuation. Therefore, it might be asked, what are the qualities that allowed the K.u.K. Armee to act as a unifying element of the Empire?

Members of the K.u.K. HRM:

  • It has ever been the custom of the enemies of the Catholic Church to misrepresent and falsify the doctrines and positions of her Magisterium, to create fertile lies of filth and muck for the growing of division among the Body of Christ, and to separate the flock of the Faithful from their Vicar. Now especially in this Pontificate of our Holy Father Francis these activities have renewed with greater strength.

Austria, christendom, Emperor Franz Josef I, Holy Roman Empire, Imperial History, The Great War

franz-josef-in-prayerOn this day (November 21) one hundred years ago (in 1916), His Majesty Franz Josef, Emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia, Apostolic King of Hungary, King of Jerusalem (etc.), and heir of the Holy Roman Emperors, entered Eternal Life after a reign of sixty-eight years. He came to the throne amidst the fires of revolution, and died amidst the ashes of the Great War, and yet for the long years of his reign, his peoples were at peace and contented. So long as he ruled it, this last remnant of Christendom in Europe seemed as though it would last into the far distant future. And yet his own life was fraught with tragedy that might have brought lesser men to despair, the murder of his brother, of his only son, of his wife, and finally of his heir, and through it all he held firm to his God-given duties to his peoples.

However, the death of the old Emperor was not only a time of mourning, for it was also on this day that Archduke Karl ascended to the throne of the war-torn Empire; Emperor as was foretold by St. Pius X, and though most of his reign would be spent in exile, he was certainly a worthy successor of his great-uncle Franz Josef, blessed with same courage and devotion.

And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars: And being with child, she cried travailing in birth, and was in pain to be delivered.

And there was seen another sign in heaven: and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns: and on his head seven diadems:

And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered; that, when she should be delivered, he might devour her Son.

And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with an iron rod: and her Son was taken up to God, and to His throne- The Revelations (Apocalypse) of St. John 12:1-5

On the days of December ninth through the twelfth in 1531, the twelfth year of the reign of Emperor and King Charles V, our Lady appeared to the Aztec Cuauhtlatoatzin, who had taken the baptismal name of Juan Diego. Five times she appeared to him, and the final time she appeared to him she left the Indian with a miraculous image of herself, an image which exists to this day. The natives, hitherto slaves of a bloodthirsty almost demonic cult, flocked to the image of our Mother and were converted.
