It’s a well known story. The brave, numerous, and blond Barbarians from beyond the Northern borders of the Roman Empire overran that corrupt entity, which had become too fat to protect itself. Rome was clearly in its last days anyway, and it was time for something new. It’s the story that gets told in the history books, in the news, and unfortunately on a good number of Catholic blogs.

And it’s a lie.

Well, maybe lie is too strong a word. It’s a myth, a creation myth. It justifies the violent overthrow of such anachronisms as Emperors and Kings. It justifies Nationalism and they falsely called it freedom. They have hidden the truth well.

But not well enough for those determined to trace it.

The War between Civilization and Barbarianism is far from over. From the battle of Tours to the White Mountain to Lepanto to the Siege of Vienna, the men of Rome have held fast for their Emperor and King. Christendom has fought before for its existence, amidst constant invasion from almost every direction. Against the North, the East, and the South the West has triumphed, and spread its civilization throughout the world.

But now we’re under a disadvantage, for the Barbarians have driven forth our Emperor and King, they fill our histories with their lies, and they sacrifice our unborn brothers and sisters to their sinister gods. We must fight this, for as I have said before, the only alternative to Civilization is the death of the soul.

Proclaim ye this among the nations: prepare war, rouse up the strong: let them come, let all the men of war come up. Cut your ploughshares into swords, and your spades into spears.- Joel 3:9-10
